EARLY INVESTIGATOR TRAVEL AWARDS

The Dyspnea Society offers support to members with early investigator status (PhD student or post-doc) to present their research at scientific conferences. Application deadlines are February 15 and August 15; notification of decision will be sent out by the end of February and August respectively.

Guidelines:

  • The applicant should be a Dyspnea Society student member in good standing. This particular award is not available to full (faculty) members.
  • The applicant must be the first author of the conference abstract and be the presenter.
  • Each awardee will receive a minimum of $500USD to support conference registration, travel and/or accommodation.
  • A committee will evaluate the applications twice a year, once in February and once in August. The award will be sent directly to the applicant.
  • One abstract can receive only one travel grant from the Dyspnea Society.
  • The early investigator author of an accepted abstract can apply twice within a year if the first application is not successful.
  • Applications must be received at least 3-weeks prior to the conference date.
  • Awardees must visibly acknowledge The Dyspnea Society as a sponsor in their presentation slides or poster. Sponsorship material (logo, text) to be included in presentations will be provided by the society.
  • The Dyspnea Society reserves the right not to award any applicants in a particular cycle if applications do not meet the required standards.
  • The Dyspnea Society reserves the right to change the award policies at any time except in February and August.

Selection Criteria:

Committee review of applications will use the following selection criteria (in descending order).

  1. The study directly addresses the mechanisms, measurement and/or management of dyspnea.
  2. The study’s scientific merit, quality and potential impact on the field.
  3. The scope of the meeting (international or national professional body).
  4. Abstracts accepted as oral presentations or posters will be treated equally, but the applicant can provide this information to be used as a tie breaker.
  5. The committee will consider the factors above along with the availability of funding on an application-by-application basis.
  6. The application is for the early investigator’s first time presenting at a conference.
